Donna Vaillancourt
How long have you been a member of The Bookies?
I am a returning member of the Bookies after moving a distance from the group. I enthusiastically returned in 2022.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find great inspiration from being in nature and reflecting on the colors, shapes ,relationships
diversity. I am also inspired when I create in the presence of other artists like the Bookies. I have learned a great deal by attending workshops, reading books and magazines, participating in virtual programs and viewing sources like Pinterest and Etsy. I am amazed at the creativity of others.
Tell me about your favorite medium.
My favorite medium is Paste Paper. When I first learned to create these decorative papers a whole world of creativity opened for me. I am attracted to this medium because I love color, mark making and abstractness. Using the papers in making books provides a means of exhibiting my work. I also love to write Haiku because it immerses me in nature and challenges me to see more deeply into the essence of what is before me.
Does art help in other areas of your life?
Art has helped me to be more intentional in my life – to be more present to the moment and to appreciate the deep riches of the connection and oneness of ALL, of EVERYTHING. It lures me beyond the superficial to a stance of looking beyond the obvious – what’s real but not always apparent. Art nurtures and expresses my contemplative nature.
Describe your ideal working environment.
I am most creative in an environment of quiet. Sometimes soft music inspires me. I have been profoundly inspired by three pieces in particular: Pachelbel Canon D, Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part.
